Too hot. Too Cold.

Underfloor Heating fault

Fortunately, Domestic Heating Systems are generally quite simple.

Often, problems can be identified and perhaps rectified without my intervention, saving time and money.

Below are some general recommended steps to help rectify the route cause of either over or under heating of your property.

It is however important to remember that Underfloor Heating is designed to heat the room and not be warming to your toes! If the Underfloor Heating feels hot to the touch, it is not functioning correctly.

What is the heat source for your installation?

Underfloor Heating can work effectively with a Gas Boiler, Oil Boiler or Heat Pump.

Does the heat source provide heating and hot water? If it does both and you still have hot water, this could be due to a control problem, faulty pump or valve. It is unlikely to be a problem with the heat source.

If you have no heating or hot water, the heat source could be at fault. This may require support from a Gas Safe Registered Engineer, Oftec Registered Engineer or Heat Pump Specialist.

What happens WHEN you turn all thermostats up to maximum?

This is a temporary test. If turning ALL thermostats up to maximum heats all of the building, you have just confirmed that each circuit is capable of heating the property, although not correctly.

If turning ALL thermostats up to maximum heats partial areas of the building, you have confirmed that your heat source is functioning, at least some of the actuators and pumps are functioning. Note the various areas which are being heated for further reference.

What happens WHEN you turn all thermostats down to minimum?

This is a temporary test. If turning ALL thermostats down to minimum heats all of the building, you have just confirmed that each circuit is capable of heating the property, which isn’t necessarily bad as the expensive faults are less likely!

If turning ALL thermostats down to minimum heats partial areas of the building, there is the potential of a controls (electrical) issue and/or valve actuators have failed in the open position, or removed from the Underfloor Heating Manifold.
